Socializing is like the English language: there are more exceptions than rules. But there are things you can do to make life easier.
One of the biggest hurdles is understanding what topics are appropriate to discuss on the job, as it's different for every workplace. Thankfully, there are ways to gauge an answer to that question.
How do your coworkers talk about work? Do they voice their opinions on work projects freely, or do they hold their tongue? Do your coworkers have preferred ways of communication, such as email vs. face-to-face communication?
Do your coworkers talk about non-work matters? If so, what kinds of topics are discussed? How often are non-work matters brought up, and where do they normally get talked about?
One thing is for sure: you do not have to get the answers to all of the questions listed above in one day. You can take as much time as you need to figure things out, and you shouldn’t change your personality to fit a company’s.
